Students in Ceramics I demonstrate their understanding of the slab building technique by designing and creating an enclosed vessel with a puzzle lid. In order to ensure success in this endeavor, students work extensively during the planning stages, sketching designs and creating a template out of their artwork in paper. Students get first hand experience in the importance of planning and reworking designs before starting in on their final piece.
Each vessel focuses on a theme of the student's choosing. Some are quite literal, while others are more abstract in nature. All students incorporated a variety of additive and subtracting relief in order to add interest to their works.
