Collage Cityscapes

First graders began this project by looking at cityscape photos of large cities around the world.  We discussed overlapping and geometric shapes and then set to work creating our own.
Students drew a sidewalk along the bottom of their page and then used a watercolor wash technique to add blue sky to the rest of the page.  Oftentimes, students at this level think of the sky as above everything, so it was important to emphasize that the sky color must come all the way down to the sidewalk.
Buildings were created using various rectangles of construction paper with windows and doors added using markers.  Students then used their knowledge of overlapping to glue their buildings to their background.
We finished off the project by reading the Virginia Lee Burton book, The Little House.
