Paper Mache Birds

First and second graders created these paper mache birds as an introduction to 3-dimensional sculpture.  They began by creating a potato shape out of newspaper and tape and then spent several class periods covering the birds with newspaper, paper towel, and tissue paper.
We finished them off with legs, beaks, feathers, and eyes.  The birds allowed each student to see just what their hands were capable of creating.

The assessment students filled out for this project was similar to the one linked to the left, but with bird faces instead of people faces.  The space at the bottom of the assessment was provided as an area for students to write a sentence describing their project using adjectives from the A to Z Art Wall.
