Radial Name Designs

Doing a name oriented project was a great way to start off the year with sixth graders that were brand new to the middle school.  To begin the project they brainstormed descriptive words about themselves and did an introductory activity on color theory using the color wheel.  Next they used a compass to create a pinwheel radial design on their paper.  Every other ray was filled in with either a word about them colored with complementary colors or an analogous color gradation.

The students learned introductory color information that they would need to know for the whole year, while I had a chance to learn more about them and their personalities.

Students used the rubric below throughout the creation of their project.
