Symmetrical Butterflies

First grade students learned about symmetry in preparation for this art project.  We brainstormed as a class to think of all the things in our daily lives that show symmetry.  Once everyone understood the concept, students folded a piece of paper in half and drew one half of a butterfly connected to the folded edge.  They cut their butterfly out with scissors and then dabbed different painted designs onto one half of their paper.  By folding their paper back up, each student was able to create a butterfly with symmetrical wing designs!
