Second grade students incorporated their math skills in the creation of these beautiful snowflakes. I borrowed the tangram blocks from the second grade teachers so that students could use them to design interesting snowflakes with identifiable geometric shapes. As a class, we discussed how snowflakes are unique and detailed, each one with six sides. We looked at a variety of different real-life snowflakes for inspiration during the brainstorming process. Then, each student chose a variety of shapes to use in the creation of their six-sided geometric snowflake. They traced these shapes with pencil and sharpie and colored them in with crayons. For the finishing touch, each student cut out a coordinating background for their snowflake and added just a touch of glitter on top to make it sparkle.
