Texturized Hands
Finding a project for a substitute to teach that incorporates art concepts and challenges the students can sometimes be a tough endeavor, but this project is excellent whether I am the one teaching it or whether there is a guest teacher in the room.
The students trace their hands multiple times and then work with analogous colors and textures to fill in the new shapes that have been created on the paper.
I have taught this project to both sixth and eighth graders and it has worked well for both. The sixth graders were introduced to concepts with color theory and texture, while the project worked as a review for my eighth grade students.
