Wheel Thrown Mugs

Students in Ceramics I are always very excited to learn to throw on the wheel.  We focus on a basic cylinder form so that students have plenty of time to practice centering, without the need to worry about multiple forms.  Each student creates a minimum of two cylinders and then trims the feet and add a pulled handle to each one.

This unit is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate perseverance and creative problem solving.  Wheel throwing is much more difficult than most students think it will be!  Practice and self-reflection are a large aspect of this unit as students work to improve their basic skills without getting frustrated.  They are also encouraged to use mistakes to their advantage, enhancing imperfections and working them into a theme that unifies their pieces.
