Paper Mache Castles

This project is one that I remember doing when I was in fifth grade so I really enjoyed teaching it to my own fifth graders.  We designed castles using cardboard boxes and masking tape and then paper mached them with newspaper and paper towels.  When the castles were dry the students painted them with tempera paints and added details like drawbridge doors and ivy creeping up the walls.

They were excited to have created something three-dimensional and the finished projects looked great on display with medieval themed projects that students from other grade levels created.
